Why Parallel EVM Makes Fully On-Chain CLOB Possible

Standard Ethereum Virtual Machine execution is sequential. Every transaction in a block runs one after another, in order. For a CLOB perpetual DEX, this creates a hard throughput ceiling: if 100 order operations arrive in the same block, they execute as a queue of 100 sequential operations. At Ethereum’s current throughput, this is prohibitively slow for a trading venue — fills take multiple blocks, cancellations are slow, and the user experience is unusable for anything beyond low-frequency position management.

Monad’s parallel EVM solves this by executing independent transactions simultaneously. Monad’s execution engine uses an optimistic parallel execution model:

  1. All transactions in a block begin executing simultaneously
  2. When a transaction reads from or writes to a state slot another is using, the system detects the conflict and re-executes the conflicted transaction
  3. Transactions with non-overlapping state reads/writes — the majority of orderbook operations — complete in parallel

The result: 10,000 TPS with 1-second finality, claimed by the Monad team. For a CLOB, this means order submissions, fills, cancellations, and position updates across different price levels and different trader accounts execute in parallel, making true on-chain orderbook mechanics feasible at trading-relevant speed.


The Shared Thesis: Fully On-Chain CLOB

Most high-performance perp DEXes use a hybrid model: matching happens off-chain (fast, but requires trusting a sequencer) and settlement happens on-chain (verifiable, but delayed). GRVT, Extended, Pacifica, and Nado all use this hybrid architecture.

Perpl and BULK Exchange both reject this. They share the thesis that the matching engine itself should run on-chain — verifiable, permissionless, and not dependent on a trusted off-chain party for transaction ordering.
